My Media Fast

It has been exactly one month since I posted on Mister Nifty. The reason, I took a media fast. You’ve heard of fasting I’m sure. I decided to stop intaking videos, movies, blogs, news, magazines, radio, and any other form of media so that I could focus more on the more important things in life like God, my wife, church, family and friends. It was a journey that has changed my life. I found after taking those voices and noises out of my head, I was able to think clearly and I accomplished a lot that I needed to get done. I was not on information overload all day long. The cloud in my brain went away.

I found that media of any form affects our lives whether we like to think it does or not. It produces temptations in all forms for us to get our minds off what God wants us to be thinking about. The point is, we can’t get so caught up in techyness that we lose out on the simpler things and spiritual things in life. By no stretch am I going to become a hermit. I have decided to leave some forms of media out of my life because I’ve seen how pleasant life is without them. I challenge you to examine your media intake and look how it is affecting your life. You might be surprised!

This is great Brian and is a good reminder to us all who find ourselves constantly “busy in our ministries”. Sometimes we get so busy and preoccupied that we neglect the most important ministry of all… our relationship with God, our relationship with our spouse and our relationship with our kids (in that specific order). If we fail in those relationships, we fail it all and it’s all for naught.

On a side note, thank you so much for your ministry via Mister Nifty. It’s been a tremendous help to me personally and to our church.

Glad to be of service to fellow laborers! I like what blogger Josh Cook said from youthhacks.com.

“If you’re like me, you’re tired. And I don’t mean the kind of tired that can be fixed with a night of sleep; I mean the kind of deep tired that sinks into your bones.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently and (seriously) God spoke these words to me: “Naps Are a Sacrament”.

Yes, God wants you to work hard and accomplish things. He wants you to be successful and determined. But there’s a pretty good chance that, right now, he just wants you to lay down and get some sleep.

Thus sayeth the Lord.”

Well said. Thanks for the kind words Nathan.
